Letter from America – from Steven Mills

 ‘חֲנֹךְ לַנַּעַר עַל פִּי דַרְכּוֹ גַּם כִּי יַזְקִין לֹא יָסוּר מִמֶּנָּה’

‘Train a child according to his way; even when he grows old, he will not turn away from it.’

Mishlei / Proverbs – 22:6

We start the first night of Chanukah with one light, then add another each night until the lights glow brighter.
The Hebrew word ‘Chinuch’, ‘education’ shares the same root as the word ‘Chanukah’.
When we educate a child, we start with their natural light, and try and build upon it, so their light shines brighter than before.
Every child has their own unique, natural light which needs to be cultivated and developed.
Dr. Gary Greenberg’s amazing microscope photographs of grains of sand (sandgrains.com) illuminates this concept.
They reveal to us that contrary to appearances, sand is made up of delicate, colorful structures, highly complex and individual.
Similarly, to educate ‘a child according to his way’, we have to look beyond the surface and deep into the child themselves, to bring their inner beauty to the fore.
